AI in legal departments: EnBW and Xayn cooperate
German energy provider uses Europe's first sovereign Legal AI Noxtua
Xayn's Legal AI Noxtua analyzes, reviews and drafts legal documents
Noxtua automates standard legal tasks at EnBW in a legally compliant manner and reduces the workload for users
BERLIN/KARLSRUHE, July 17, 2024 – Analyzing, checking, summarizing, translating and rewriting legal documents in a legally compliant manner – Europe’s first sovereign Legal AI Noxtua makes this possible. EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, one of Germany's largest energy companies, is now using the Legal AI Noxtua.
Europe's first sovereign legal AI Noxtua consists of its own legal language model and a Legal Copilot and is being developed by Berlin-based AI startup Xayn with special input and legal expertise from international commercial law firm CMS. The specialized AI solution is legally competent and up-to-date, as it is trained in short training cycles with legal documents labeled by legal experts. This makes the Legal Copilot suitable for performing legal tasks. In addition to data protection requirements, the legally compliant AI fulfills the requirements for the use of services according to Section 43e BRAO (German Federal Code for Lawyers) and the protection of professional secrecy according to Section 203 StGB (German Criminal Code).
European AI as a strategic choice
"Noxtua is a highly specialized AI solution tailored to the needs of lawyers. From the very beginning, we have put special emphasis on legal expertise, privacy and security. Because we also see it as our responsibility to develop future-proof AI with European values," explains Dr. Leif-Nissen Lundbæk (CEO & Co-Founder of Xayn). "We are convinced that specialized AI can become a success model for Europe. We are therefore delighted to have convinced EnBW of our European approach and to have won them over for this strategic cooperation."
"AI already plays an important role in legal work today. In times of the global AI race, the choice of AI partners is always a strategic decision. For us as an energy supplier with systemic importance, compliance with professional legal requirements was a key argument for choosing Noxtua as Europe's first sovereign legal AI," said Dr. Bernd-Michael Zinow (General Counsel of EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG). "With AI solutions like Noxtua, we want to find out how AI can make our work easier and reduce our workload so that we have more capacity for our core tasks."
"With the growing number of regulations, such as the GDPR and the AI Act, the workload of internal legal experts is also increasing. In particular, the evolving digital regulation in the EU has great potential for standardization and automation, which is why it is well suited as a use case for AI solutions," affirms Maximilian Hermann (Lead Counsel Customer & Data at EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG).
Support and empowerment through automation
As an energy provider, EnBW pays special attention to data protection and security, which is why sovereign AI solutions from Europe with high data protection precautions are particularly attractive. The strategic AI collaboration between EnBW and Xayn introduces forward-looking, legally compliant and labor-saving automation that can also improve the quality of work through standardization.
As a first step, Noxtua will support internal legal experts with repetitive tasks. In the future, Noxtua will provide legal support as an assistance and self-service tool at the interface to the operational business. Noxtua can also enable non-lawyers to review documents according to specific criteria through pre-defined and automated workflows.
Xayn, in turn, will benefit from this strategic collaboration by being able to complement its Legal AI with additional services.
