BERLIN, October 2, 2024 – Data is the foundation for AI innovations. However, companies still face uncertainties when it comes to sharing and using data. To enhance the appeal of data spaces and facilitate cross-data-space exchange, the Berlin-based AI start-up Xayn is developing an AI-based security and quality monitoring system as part of the MISSION KI initiative. This new application will automatically alert data space users if there are compliance violations or cybersecurity risks during the data exchange process, significantly improving security and data quality. By doing so, it builds trust in data exchange and lays the groundwork for data-driven innovations and the competitiveness of Germany as an AI hub.

Xayn has developed the first sovereign European legal AI, Noxtua, which features its own language model and offers a privacy-compliant alternative to U.S.-based AI solutions. As part of MISSION KI, Xayn will further develop its technology for secure data exchange between companies within data spaces, leveraging Noxtua’s technology. The goal of the review system is to continuously monitor and ensure compliance with EU data economy legislation, such as the Data Act, the Data Governance Act, and the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), as well as industry-specific regulations during data exchange. Additionally, the solution will automatically verify data space-specific rules governing direct data exchange (peer-to-peer data exchange). Xayn aims to develop the software solution for monitoring regulatory-compliant data usage by the end of the year, exploring various architectural approaches in the process.

The MISSION KI team is collaborating with Xayn to continuously develop and test the new AI review system across various data spaces. The partners will be supported by Allianz. The insurance company provides extensive datasets for testing and contributes its compliance and security expertise to the project. The goal is to offer the new application to data spaces as an open-source version upon the project’s completion.

Manfred Rauhmeier, Managing Director of acatech, highlights the importance of the project: “The development of this AI application by Xayn is a milestone for MISSION KI. It embodies our approach of promoting innovative technologies that not only strengthen the data economy but also ensure adherence to European values and standards. This collaboration will play a significant role in connecting data spaces across sectors and strengthening Germany’s AI ecosystem. We are also pleased that Allianz is supporting us by providing datasets and expertise.”

Dr. Ralf Schneider, who served as CIO at Allianz for many years and now leads its "Cybersecurity and NextGenIT Think Tank", explains: "As a global company, we see enormous potential in utilizing artificial intelligence for the secure and compliant use of data. This AI-supported compliance review system will enable us and other companies to further improve multilateral data exchange. We are proud to contribute our expertise to this forward-looking project and help drive digital transformation."

Dr. Leif-Nissen Lundbæk, CEO and Co-Founder of Xayn, adds: “Our goal is to create an AI solution that is not only technologically advanced but also meets the highest European data protection and security standards. With MISSION KI, we share the approach of developing future-oriented, sovereign technology based on European values, thereby promoting the digital competitiveness of the German economy. By collaborating with MISSION KI and partners like Allianz, we can ensure that our technology is developed with practical relevance and creates real added value for companies and the entire data economy.”

MISSION KI is expected to publish the project results in the spring of 2025. The initiative aims to strengthen data spaces as a data foundation for AI innovations. The solution developed through this effort enhances the quality and conformity of data in data spaces, thus providing an important basis for new, valuable AI applications.

About Xayn

The AI startup Xayn develops Noxtua, Europe’s first sovereign Legal AI. Noxtua helps lawyers analyze, review, and draft legal documents in seconds while being legally competent and compliant. Hosted in the EU, Noxtua meets high standards of confidentiality in handling client data, professional secrecy (e.g. Section 203 German Criminal Code, Section 43e German Federal Code for Lawyers), and European data protection. The Legal Copilot is powered by the specialized AI models Noxtua Large Language Model and Noxtua Voyage Embed. The models are trained with high-quality legal data provided by the Legal AI Alliance which the tech startup Xayn initiated with the international business law firm CMS. This makes Noxtua the secure, independent, and specialized European Legal AI.

The Berlin-based AI company Xayn was born out of research at Oxford University and Imperial College London by Dr Leif-Nissen Lundbæk and Professor Michael Huth. Founded in 2017, Xayn’s academic vision remains, with a workforce comprised of approx. 30% PhDs. The startup has received investment funding of 19.5 million EURO from Global Brain Corporation, KDDI Open Innovation Fund, Earlybird, and Dominik Schiener.
